Food Lab Finds Region Has Low Food Self-Reliance

Currently, Erie and Niagara County farms grow enough produce to healthfully feed only 38 percent of our population.  This food system factoid and the story behind it can be found in an article entitled “Are we growing enough food in our region?” which was published today by One Region Forward and featured on Buffalo Rising.  The report, authored by the Food Systems Planning and Healthy Communities Lab, describes the connections between the low consumption levels of healthy foods locally, and the low levels of local and national production of fruits and vegetables.  It advocates for polices that improve food access and promote food production by growing the connections between local residents and farmers.  By growing these connections, we can improve our health, support our local farms, and boost our local economy.

This report was developed as part of the Food Systems Planning and Healthy Communities Lab’s involvement in One Region Forward, a HUD-funded sustainable communities planning effort for Erie and Niagara Counties.  The Lab is creating a sustainable food systems report entitled “Growing Together,” which is one of five components of One Region Forward sustainability plan.
